Sherman Alexie’s, “Why the Best Kids Books Are Written in Blood” (2011) proves that controversial young adult novels help children facing every day dangers, from the most poverty stricken to the most elite. He supports this claim with stories from his experiences speaking to adolescents who claim that her often banned book The Absolutely True Story of a Part Time Indian has helped save their life in one way or another. The main purpose of this article is to combat beliefs that adolescents should be sheltered from controversial young adult novels if the content seems too mature or offensive in order to promote the use of controversial books to educate. The main audience for this article is anyone who cares about banned books in education, and in fact, Alexie calls out a writer from The Wall Street Journal with whom she disagrees about the argument.
